AISI announced that in the week ended May 2, 2020, domestic steel production in the United States was 1,144,000 net tonnes and a capacity utilization rate of 51.1%. For the week ending May 2, 2019, production was 1,889,000 tonnes, while capacity utilization was 81.2%.
Manufacturing this week represents a 39.4 percent decline over the same period the previous year. Production for the week ending May 2, 2020 was down 8.5 percent from the previous week ending April 25, 2020, when production was 1,250,000 net tonnes and capacity utilization was 55.8%.
Adjusted annual production as of 2 May 2020 was 29,655,000 net tonnes at a capacity utilization rate of 77.5%. This is 11.0 percent less than the 33,338,000 tonnes in the same period last year, when the capacity utilization rate was 81.4%.
