Subsidiary BAE Systems ASC Shipbuilding has signed a contract with BlueScope Steel AIS to supply steel for the prototype phase of the Hunter-class frigate construction program. Under the A $ 2.6 million contract, BlueScope will supply over 1,500 tonnes of steel plate to ASC Shipbuilding in Osborne, Adelaide.
BlueScope, Australian Steel Products’ executive director John Nowlan said the company has a long history of supplying steel for defense projects – 20,000 tonnes of steel have been used to build ANZAC-class frigates. Novlan said: “This contract is an important first step in the potential supply of steel during the construction phase of nine submarine hunting warships.”
