ArcelorMittal Italia will reduce activities at its Taranto plant

Last week, ArcelorMittal Italia announced that it would suspend or reduce activities at several sites at its Taranto plant. The cold rolling section, galvanizing line # 1 and pickling line will be out of service indefinitely, while weekly shifts will be reduced at other plants. Local metallurgical unions commented: “This is all due to a drop in orders, which will lead to a sharp reduction in staff at all operations and maintenance facilities.”

Local union UILM said: “The new stoppages and production cuts reported by ArcelorMittal are another provocative act against workers and unions. In recent days, the company has stepped up actions that have no economic or organizational justification. ArcelorMittal must be dismissed for neither contract defiance, nor economic and environmental conditions, and because it continues to destroy sites and factories, jeopardizing the health and safety of workers and citizens. ”
