The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has announced the publication of its 2019 Annual Statistical Report (ASR). The report provides a comprehensive analysis of data from the North American steel industry with a particular focus on the US industry.
The report presents selected statistics from the steel industry in Canada, Mexico and the world. It contains extensive charts and graphs for steel data over a 10-year period, including detailed import and export data.
Domestic steel mill shipments totaled 96.1 million net tonnes (NT) in 2019, up 0.9% year-on-year. Rough steel production posted a slight increase of 1.3% year-on-year to 96.7 million tonnes in 2019. Steel imports have been declining for the second consecutive year. Total steel imports declined 17% year-on-year, while finished steel imports fell 18%. The leading end-use markets for steel products in the United States were the construction and automotive industries.
Kevin Dempsey, Interim President and CEO of AISI, noted that AISI’s annual statistics report serves as an important source of industry data. He added that it remains the industry standard for US steel market reporting.
