Ukraine has reduced steel exports to 15.2 million tons

Ukraine in 2020 reduced steel exports to 15.2 million tons from 15.6 million tons a year earlier, but rose in the ranking of exporters from 10th to 9th place, according to the World Steel Association (World Steel Association, Worldsteel) annual collection.

According to him, India was ranked higher than Ukraine last year among exporters – 17.1 million tons, Italy closes the top ten – 14.9 million tons, and China is still at the top of this list with 51.4 million tons, for which go to Russia – 31.5 million tons and Japan – 29.8 million tons.

At the same time, due to the small volume of imports, Ukraine in the world ranking of net exporters in 2020 retained its fourth place with an indicator of 13.9 million tons, which is only slightly less than the indicator of 2019 of 14 million tons.

The first place here belongs to Russia with 26.4 million tons, the second – to Japan with 24.8 million tons, the third – South Korea with 16.1 million tons, while China is fifth in this list with 13.5 million tons.

China was the largest importer of metal last year with 37.09 million tons, in second place – The EU-28 with 32.6 million tons, excluding interregional trade, is in third place for the United States with 19.9 million tons.

In the ranking of net importers at the end of 2020, the USA is leading with 13.6 million tons , on the second place is the EU-28 with 10 million tons, Saudi Arabia is in third place with 7.2 million tons.

Worldsteel recalls that Ukraine produced 20.6 million tons of steel in 2020 and took 12th place (in 2019 – 13th place with 20.8 million tons), the volume of pig iron production amounted to 20.4 million tons (20.1 million tons). At the same time, the country exported 3.1 million tons (2.6 million tons) of pig iron last year, and its apparent consumption amounted to 17.3 million tons (17.5 million tons).

Visible steel consumption in Ukraine in 2020, according to the association, amounted to 4.6 million tons (4.7 million tons in 2020), while consumption per person – 105.5 kg (in 2019 – 105.8 kg /person).

On average in the world in 2020, the apparent consumption of steel was 227.5 kg /person. (230.3 kg /person). The best indicators are in South Korea 954.9 kg /person. (1039 kg /person), Taiwan 777 kg /person. (740.9 kg /person), Czech Republic 616.3 kg /person. (637.6 kg /person), China 691.3 kg /person. (636 kg /person), Japan 415.7 kg /person. (498.3 kg /person) and Austria 405.1 kg /person. (444.4 kg /person).

Worldsteel also indicates that the share of open-hearth steel production in Ukraine in 2020 decreased to 19% from 23.1% a year earlier, and electric steelmaking – to 5.5 % from 5.8%. In addition to Ukraine, according to the collection, open-hearth production in the past year remained in Russia, but its share there was 2%.

In general, in the world, oxygen-converter steel production in 2020 accounted for 73.2% , for electric steelmaking – 26.3%, for open-hearth and other – 0.2% each.

As reported, steel production in the world last year increased slightly – to 1 billion 877.5 million tons from 1 billion 874.4 million tons a year earlier.
