On October 21, 2020, a Memorandum was signed between the Zaporizhzhya Regional State Administration and PJSC Zaporizhstal on joint obligations in the field of environmental protection. The document, which will mark the start of cooperation between the regional government and big business in the interests of the environmental safety of the region, was signed by the head of the Zaporozhye regional state administration Vitaly Bogovin and the General Director of Zaporizhstal Alexander Mironenko.

The program of events includes ten environmentally friendly solutions for Zaporizhstal production. The plant is already carrying out some of them: in particular, Zaporizhstal has begun construction of additional aspiration systems for cleaning exhaust gases from the sinter discharge points from the tailings of sinter machines. The project for the reengineering of the company’s locomotives will also be continued. In the blast furnace shop “Zaporizhstal” will reconstruct the aspirations of the blast furnaces No. 2 and 4, overhaul the blast furnaces No. 5 and reconstruct the aspiration of the blast furnace. The plans include the reconstruction of the furnaces of the steel-making shop, which involves the construction of a new steel-making unit, the reconstruction of the existing and gradual decommissioning of open-hearth furnaces.
In addition, the plant plans to install automatic monitoring posts for the state of atmospheric air at the borders of its own sanitary zones.
The implementation of all these solutions in the 2020–2027 horizon. will reduce dust and nitrogen oxide emissions by 20%.

A modern hydrochloric acid pickling line was built, which made it possible to completely stop the discharge of sulfuric acid vapors from cold rolling shop No. 1 into the Dnieper and sulfuric acid vapors into the atmosphere.
