Steel-making enterprise “Elektrostal” stood idle and did not produce continuously cast billets

Steel-making enterprise “Elektrostal” (Kurakhovo, Donetsk region) stood idle in January-April of this year and did not produce continuously cast billets, while in the same period last year it smelted 36 thousand tons of products.

As a representative of Elektrostal told Interfax-Ukraine, the plant was also idle in April, as in March, February, January this year and last December, while in November 2 thousand tons of products were smelted. October – 10 thousand tons.

At the same time, he recalled that from January to mid-March 2019, the enterprise was completely idle and partially resumed work from mid-March 2020, after which it worked at a third of capacity or less.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Development Dmitry Kisilevsky at a meeting held on February 22 of this year on the functioning of metal enterprises and their provision with scrap metal stated that due to a shortage of scrap in Ukraine, the modern enterprise “Elektrostal” is idle, and urged the state to deal with this problem.

As of the beginning of the second decade of May 2021, the prices for shredded scrap in Turkey exceeded $ 500 /ton. It is expected that prices will remain high due to a shortage of scrap metal on the market.

As reported, Ukrainian enterprises in January-April 2021 increased the export of ferrous scrap by 7.5 times compared to the same period in 2020 – up to 86.979 thousand tons, including delivering 37.874 thousand tons of scrap in April.

On April 27, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a general law “On Amendments to Section II” Final and Transitional Provisions “of the Law Of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Concerning Reducing the Deficit of Ferrous Scrap on the Domestic Market”, which provides for the extension of the export duty of EUR58 /tonne for another five years.

The law has not yet been signed by the President.

In 2020, Elektrostal kept the output of continuously cast billets at the level of the previous year – 84 thousand tons.

Since 2000, the Donetsk Metal Rolling Plant (DMPZ) began to experience a shortage of purchased steel billets for its own rolling production, as a result of which it was decided to build a steel-making enterprise – “Elektrostal”.

DMPZ specializes in the production and sale of metal products: long products, cast iron pipes, structural elements of ferrous metals, nuts and shovels .
