Finance Minister Sergei Marchenko says there is no reason to worry about the hryvnia exchange rate after the announcement of the resignation of the chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine Yakov Smoliy. “I believe that there is no reason to worry about the exchange rate in connection with the official’s resignation. Perhaps today we can see some turbulence in the market, but I believe that an appropriate decision will be made, and perhaps in the near future everything will calm down, ”Marchenko said on July 2 in Kiev.
He added that Smoliy’s resignation will not change the situation on the foreign exchange market. On the evening of July 1, the chairman of the National Bank, Yakov Smoliy, wrote a letter of resignation of his own free will for “systematic political pressure.” The President’s Office assured that the National Bank will remain an independent body.
Yakov Smoliy has been working as Chairman of the NBU since March 2018. The issue of his resignation should be considered by the parliament. After Smoliy’s statement, the dollar jumped by 40 kopecks.
