Metinvest, the largest Ukrainian mining and metallurgical holding, at the end of 2020 took 45th place in the list of the world’s largest steel producers with a volume of 10.16 million tons, compared with 42nd place in 2017-19, when it produced 9.59 million tons, 9.37 million tons and 9.58 million tons, respectively.
According to the annual compilation published by the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), China Baowu Group became the largest steel company at the end of last year – 115.29 million tons (in 2019 – 95.47 million tons) , and ArcelorMittal dropped to second place from the first – 78.46 million tons (in 2019 – 97.31 million tons).
Then comes Shagang Group with 41.59 million tons, Nippon Steel from 41 , 58 million tons (51.68 million tons), HBIS Group with 43.76 million tons (46.56 million tons) and POSCO with 40.58 million tons (43.12 million tons).
There are no Ukrainian companies in the list of the 50 largest world steel producers in 2020, as well as in 2014-19, except for Metinvest. The Industrial Union of Donbass Corporation (ISD), which was in 44th place at the end of 2013 with a production volume of 7.9 million tons, dropped out of the list of leaders.
Among Russian companies, NLMK took 22nd place with a volume of 15.75 million tons (at the end of 2019 – 21st place from 15.61 million tons), Evraz group – 30th place from 13.63 million tons (28th place from 13.81 million tons), Magnitogorsk MK – 37th with 11.57 million tons (32nd with 12.46 million tons), Severstal – 40th with 11.31 million tons (37th with 11.85 million tons).
According to Worldsteel, Ukraine produced 20.6 million tons of steel in 2020 and took 12th place (in 2019 – 13th place with 20.8 million tons).
