The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is today releasing a public policy document “Climate Change and Iron and Steel Production”. The document describes the challenges and opportunities for the steel industry to reduce CO2 emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Steel production remains an energy and energy intensive activity. However, the steel industry intends to continue to reduce the impact of its operations and the use of its products. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to drastically reducing CO2 emissions in our industry, and we believe that individual countries are best suited to assess and implement policy and technical strategies based on their specific circumstances. However, the main elements of the industry response applicable to steelmakers around the world are:
- Reducing your own impact
- Efficiency and Circular Economy
- Developing Leading Steel Products for Social Transformation
Edwin Basson, CEO of worldsteel, said: “It is clear that governments and other stakeholders will need to work with the steel industry to overcome the technological and economic challenges and create the market conditions necessary for the low-production steel industry. – efficient production of carbon steel. ”
