The first steel beam plant in the Philippines is due to start operations in 2023, SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. said in a press release.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Lemeri, Batangas plant took place in 2019. Construction work at the plant has been hit by restrictions related to COVID-19. The construction of steel production lines and steel profile rolling was delayed. The production capacity of the enterprise will be about 1.1 million tons and it is expected to create about 1,500 jobs.
Design and supply of equipment, including heating furnaces, for the project were carried out by SMS and Fives.
Benjamin O. Yao, President of SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., noted that Lemery Works is gaining national importance as it will reduce the country’s dependence on imported steel products. The plant will stimulate domestic scrap recycling, which in turn will create jobs for local residents.
Besides Batangas, SteelAsia also has facilities in Davao, Cebu, East Misamis and Bulakan. The company plans to locate properties in Compostela Cebu, Tarlac and Quezon province.
